5 WAYS TO KEEP MOTIVATED IN ACHIEVING YOUR GOALS
Ever had one of those days.
Your alarm goes off, unalarmed and exhausted you hit the snooze button and say to yourself just another 5 mins. That 5 mins turns into an 1hr and you wonder, what's the point?
I might as well just sleep till work or college starts.
I know the feeling!
For the past month, my mornings consisted of snoozing my 6am alarm, aimlessly trying to get out of bed and start working.
I found it difficult, to navigate a schedule that would give me the motivation to wake up early, do the things I’m passionate about before the craziness of the day kicks in.
I wondered whether I should book extra leave because heck, I need more days to recover.
Yet, still trying to convince myself that we're in a pandemic so feeling energetic and motivated should be easy for me to smash my goals daily.
Well, this wasn't until I realised that my feelings of defeat came from allowing self-doubt to creep in.
I had been practicing and learning a new skill and it honestly felt like progress was long coming. This lingered on until I listened to a podcast one morning and heard this quote.
"Self-doubt will kill more dreams than failure ever will" - Christine Caine
It then hit me; these feelings of defeat didn’t necessarily come from a fear of failure but of self-doubt.
I’d have ideas upon ideas but would only act on one because the rest felt out of my reach.
This caused me to go on a search on some of the things we can do, to encourage ourselves and bring about motivation to achieving our goals.
Here are 5 things you can start doing today to encourage yourself to keep on pursuing your dreams.
1. WRITE DOWN 3 DECISIONS EACH WEEK
A couple of weeks ago, I heard of a motivational speaker who challenged everyone in the room to decide and write down 3 things to focus on for that week.
This is mainly due to most of experiencing decision fatigue within the first hours of our day, and this can blur our view of what's important on our agenda. It's important to narrow down your most important tasks, rather than trying to complete everything in one setting.
How does it look like?
You can decide you'll commit working out 4 times this week either at the gym or in the comfort of your home.
Decide to write one section of your project than completing it all in one sitting.
Decide to check in on a friend to see how they’re doing
Decide to read a chapter of your favourite book every day for 10mins because a little goes a long way.
Writing down your 3 decisions for the week will bring clear and simple perspective to avoid feelings of self-doubt.
Breaking these down in smaller steps if your goal is to lose weight or get a new job, will put in a better position where you feel encouraged everyday to work at it and avoid feelings of discouragement.
At the end of the day, you'll see progress on accomplishing your goal.
2. RECOGNISE THAT MOTIVATION WILL COME ONCE YOU START
We often think that we need motivation to start doing a project or task, but sometimes it’s the act of starting even when you don’t feel like that makes an impact.
In order to be consistent, decide that you’ll commit to daily practice and learning even when you don’t feel motivated.
As you go along, you'll find tasks become more enjoyable and easier to do.
START TODAY & BE PATIENT WITH GROWTH.
3. MAKE YOUR GOALS & DREAMS VISIBLE
Putting up your goals and dreams where you can see them reminds you of your WHY.
Most people use vision boards or charts to motivate and bring about an emotional connection to the end goal.
Reading or seeing your dreams in forms of pictures of words, allows you write down real tangible goals that remind you of what’s important, what to yes to and the things to let go.
You can easily do this by grabbing a clear A4 or A3 blank paper, go through lots of magazines and cut off pictures or words that reflect what you want to achieve.
Once you’ve done this, stick it up in your room or visible storage so you can see it daily.
Warren Shute, known for the money plan gives a pro tip of looking at your dreams every morning when you wake up & before you go to bed.
4. JOURNAL
I’ve mentioned this in a previous post on journaling and how it kept me keep track of my day.
Journaling allows you to put on paper what you’re dreaming about and longing to achieve.
It also a way of practicing self-reflection in an effort to improve or encourage professional growth.
When you get used to journaling, you'll notice small moments in your day that made you feel alive, environments that caused you to smile and work without a fuss.
You’ll notice people who warmed your heart and inspired you to dream bigger.
Check out my post on here, to find out more on how to do this.
5. TELL TRUSTED FRIENDS ABOUT YOUR GOALS
Accountability is so important for personal growth and overcoming feelings of defeat. When you tell your friends about your plans, they help keep your promise.
When they notice you’ve missed a couple of days and slacking away, they’ll remind you of why you wanted to do this in the first place.
You can set up dates when you can check in with them and if you have older mature friends you can ask for mentoring sessions, especially if they are in a field that you want to into.
Keeping accountable to others, puts you in a position where you accept responsibility for yourself, taking ownership of where are you are and how far you’ve come.
Who can you tell today, in your circle or group maybe a family member about your goals and dreams?
KEEP GOING, YOU’VE GOT SO MUCH TO GIVE :)
Lots of love, Annette
