HOW TO SET INTENTIONAL GOALS

5 WAYS TO WIN WITH YOUR GOALS

A new year always presents itself with the feeling of setting new goals.

Whether it’s starting a new workout, reading more books, learning to cook so you don’t have to spend a mill on takeaways or any personal development goals you have in mind.

I used to be one to get excited when writing new years resolutions because it almost felt like a fresh start.

My thoughts would be; maybe this year will be different than the last. I’ll come out stronger and having achieved all that I've set out to achieve.

But I'd often find that each year, I'd write down the same resolutions; I wonder if you can relate.

  • Lose this amount of weight

  • Run a half/ full marathon

  • start that business

  • pay off my debt and so on... (add your own list)

With that in mind, I'd like to share 5 ways I've been implementing to achieve my goals and I'm glad to say I've started to see results.

HERE ARE 5 WAYS TO WIN WITH YOUR GOALS

1. WHO DO YOU WANT TO BECOME

Firstly, I want you to think about who you want to become at the end of all this?

  • Why are setting these goals?

  • What’s your intention really, when you finally read that dusty book staring at you every night before you sleep or lose that certain amount of weight?

WHO DO YOU WANT TO BECOME?

I credit this post to Craig Groeschel after listening to a reset seminar on financial health.

Learning that before you write down your to do list, first understand who you want to become.

Make every goal you write down have purpose to help you get where you’d like to be.

So, pause for a moment – think about who you would like to be come and where you'd like to be at the end of this year?

2. PUT YOUR GOALS IN 5 SECTIONS

PHYSICAL OR PERSONAL

These are any personal goals you want to achieve.

  • Lose weight & build muscle

  • Learn a new skill

  • Start an online course

  • Read 4 books every month

  • Have more family time

  • Regularly give to a charity

What are your personal goals?

ECONOMICAL

Here you’ll list your financial and career goals.

  • Do you want to repay debt?

  • Increase your income

  • Change careers

  • Take a risk and start a business on the side

ADVENTURE

You can list places of travel or new experiences you want to take part in.

Of course, given the current circumstances travel seems like a long way coming but look at places you can visit locally in your city or country.

You can also take advantage of outdoor activities to keep you inspired and motivated.

GIVING

Deciding to give allows you to be grateful with the things you have.

It teaches you how to be responsible and inspires others to do the same.

  • Are they any charities you want to support this year?

  • What breaks your heart when you hear of the injustice going on around us?

  • Do you regularly give to your local church?

SPIRITUAL

  • Do you want to grow your faith in God?

  • Join a prayer group or start one

  • Do you want to serve more in your church?

Organising your goals in these categories helps to bring clarity and purpose. You can use it to specifically know how to action your goals.

3. REMOVE DISTRACTIONS

Removing distractions is the best way to keep focused and motivated.

You can do time blocks during the day that are no distraction free zone. This means leaving your phone in a room far from your workspace, having website blockers if you easily wander when doing work.

Personally, I've found my distraction free zone includes putting my phone in my room, on silent and checking only once my time block is completed.

You can create time blocks on your calendar. This can be an 1hr -3hrs of undistracted work.

Make sure to take regular breaks as this helps with refocusing and taking care of your eyes and body.

4. START TRAINING

We can often find ourselves trying to achieve our goals that we end up feeling defeated and tired.

The next time you feel like giving up, think of an athlete going into training.

  • What would they do to become successful?

  • What sacrifices do they make to consistently train and work out?

When you have the mindset that you’ll commit these next few months to train your body, mind and soul to get to where you want to be, you’ll be amazed at the results.

I’ve also started doing this, mainly due to the fact that I’ve been trying to learn guitar for almost 2 years now. (I know, don’t judge me but I didn’t realise that all this while, I had a trying mentality and not a training one.)

This to encourage you to start training. Whatever goal you’ve written out, commit to practicing like an athlete.

5. ENJOY THE PROCESS

It's not worth creating a goal that you won't enjoy.

Sometimes we find it difficult to enjoy the process, because we are either trying to rush the end result or doing it to impress others.

Decide today that the goals you've written down are developing yourself, becoming the person you want to become rather than what other people think.

Once you do this, you'll begin to see beauty in every step. Whether you suck at it for months or not, giving up will not be an option.

“Obsess over the process rather than the end-result” - Craig Groeschel
