DON'T HOLD BACK YOUR JOURNAL

DISCOVER THE BEAUTY OF WRITING EVERY DAY DOWN

Hey Climber,

For 3 months, I've been writing everyday in my journal on my experiences and thoughts for that day.

My commitment to do this came about, while scrolling through Youtube and stumbling upon a song by Jason Upton.

In it, he writes these lyrics of the song that caught my attention;

"I've got boring old black shoes An orange in my pocket And I walk the same road every day A lifetime can pass by And if we don't watch it We'll miss all that it has to say

Write every day down " - Jason Upton

So intrigued by the simplicity of he's words in the song, I decided to pick up an old dusty journal given by my friend and started to WRITE.

WHY EVERYDAY?

Journaling has many benefits both physically and mentally. If done on a regular basis, it can help bring clarity and fresh new ideas in your life.

On the 1st of June, I picked up my Messages from the Father journal and started journaling.

I would write about about anything and everything before bed as I reflected on my day.

Day by day, I would reflect whether I achieved my goals and did something challenging and outside my comfort zone.

Did I notice anything unusual? How was mood to myself and towards others?

As I began to pen down my experiences, I realised there is beauty in everyday.

GIVING TITLES TO YOUR DAY

Once I got in the flow of writing, I started to summarise my day with one word or sentence.

As I would reflect on all the activities and events of the day, I would write down my title. Some of my titles included;

  • Don't Stress Yourself

  • There's Peace in the Storm

  • Built for Community

  • Let's get Real

  • Not just an ordinary girl

Funny enough, one of my blog posts on shifting your focus came out doing this. I had written down the importance of defining your vision and aligning it to God's will.

Giving titles to your day reminds of the emotions, joys and even downfalls of your day.

Enjoying every moment because time won't turn back for us to relive moments that we treasure and love.

WRITING FOR BETTER HEALTH

Did you know that journaling everyday can improve your health drastically!

It has been proven to help reduce stress, release tension and lower blood pressure by just taking a simple 15mins a day to write down your emotions and stressors of the day.

Journaling can boost your mood and strengthen your memory, because it gives your brain a moment to remember all that you've done in your day.

I also found that I sleep better when I put my thoughts down on paper.

If I've had a tough day at work, I'll write down reasons why this was the case.

Did I mismanage my work, or under-estimate how much preparation was required before taking on a case at work.

Journaling brings clarity to these moments and gives you a chance to reflect and look at ways you can do these better next time.

"We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect.

Anais Nin

GETTING INSPIRED

Do you have a favourite writer? Maybe you love reading fiction or romance books on Kindle and have authors that captivate you in their book.

Well, you can use their writing style and qualities as inspiration to begin journaling.

Don't worry about punctuation and spelling, or even making it flow like book. JUST WRITE!

Personally, I use Emily's Gould "Today I noticed" theme to start my writing.

It involves using enforced prompts at the beginning of the sentence to give a clear description to what you're writing.

This also includes noticing how you feel internally about something or someone.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AROUND YOU & WHAT CAUGHT YOUR ATTENTION TODAY.

Here's an example of how I use Emily Gould's "Today I noticed" at the of the day.

TODAY I NOTICED…

Work was pretty hectic, had so many emails to respond to but also a few customers to call. I noticed I actually enjoy what I do, helping customer’s resolve their issues. I need motivation in the morning to get out of bed and start work. This usually starts at 9am, but once I’m in the flow, I just go with it. I noticed that I love my family and regardless of how many times they annoy me, they’re still pretty cool.

I hope this helps and feel free to leave me a comment on how journaling has helped you. I'd love to hear your tips and thoughts on others things you've noticed as you journal. And if you're inspired;

IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO START WRITING
