NO SHORT CUTS TO VICTORY

INSPIRATION FROM DIANA NYAD'S EXTREME DREAM

Hey Climber,

Have you ever wondered why some people succeed in achieving their goals and others don't?

Maybe you've been working on one skill for the last few years and can't seem to master your craft and become an expert in the field?

You're not alone because I found myself at this stage in my late twenties.

I realised that I hadn’t mastered a skill or craft that could help or teach others.

I’d merely dabbled into that one thing I found interesting and once I saw progress was not immediate, I would give up on it. Of course, other factors contributed to that as well.

Up until a day I came across a ted talk by Diana Nyad, an American author, motivational speaker and long-distance swimmer.

She is known for setting the longest record swim in history, making the 102.5-mile journey from the island of Bimini (Bahamas) to Florida. Fascinated that she’d dared to do the one thing she longed to achieve in her 20s.

Fast forward, at 60 years old she finds herself at a crossroad, realising she had given up on her dream to swim from Cuba to Florida, and wondering whether this would be possible, she began swimming for hours each day, to the point of her close friend concerned about her wellbeing.

Diana would simply practice for hours in the day to see if her body could still withstand the pressures of the raging sea waters.

Eventually, after months of practice and prepping her body for what would be her most challenging swim, she set out to Cuba to begin her long awaited swim.

Guess what; she swam an astounding 110 miles from the coast of Cuba to Florida!

Inspired by her story and the courage she took to go after her dream again, I began writing into my goal journal; “what this means for me?”

After 5 years of trying to master my skill in learning the guitar and piano, I found myself in a similar position. "Why haven’t I put in the work to see my dream of becoming a musician who can compose her own music?"

Now, don’t get me wrong I love singing and for years have put in the work to develop my craft through vocal training and exercises, but alongside that I’ve longed to pursue musical instruments whole-heartily.

With a perspective shift that it’s not too late to achieve that, I’m now on the journey to seeing my dream come to fruition.

LIFE IS A JOURNEY, WHAT WE DECIDE TO DO WITH IS ALL UP TO US.

WE GET TO CHOOSE HOW WE’LL SPEND OUR TIME RIGHT NOW AFTER YOU READ THIS AND, IN THE MONTHS TO COME.

I ENCOURAGE TO SIT DOWN IN A QUIET SPACE AND WRITE DOWN THIS – “What is my dream and what is it that I would do for free if the opportunity arose?

I want you to realise that it is never too late to chase your dream. Despite your age or short coming, you can set the intention today to START THAT THING.

WHAT IS MY THING YOU MIGHT ASK?

Well, what’s the one thing you have constantly on your mind?

What do you talk about the most to your family and friends?

One thing my family I have started doing is writing down our vision and sharing it with one other.

What can’t you stop thinking about whenever you’re bored trying to find another series to watch, wondering in your mind “I should be doing that?”‘That’ could be learning a new skill, language, run that marathon or working towards paying off that debt.

“When you achieve your dreams, it's not so much what you get but who you become.” Diana Nyad

YOU’RE NOT MEANT TO DO THIS ALONE

For most us, when we think of pursuing our dream, the journey can seem lonely and long winded.

It doesn’t have to be that way!

The one thing I loved about Diana’s story is that she had a team around her, and an awesome best friend who cheered and championed her on the journey.

Her team not only encouraged her but travelled all the way to Cuba and took on the ocean, looking out for dangerous creatures in the sea but also making sure she was fed and hydrated.

Chasing after your dream can be the same! You can surround yourself with friends who will cheer you on, but also climb in the boat with you so that you achieve your dream.

I have dear friends that have not only spoken encouraging words, but always reminded me to follow my dream.

Friends who listen, watch out when you’re losing track and keep you accountable!

Find them and Keep them close.

DECIDE WITH ME TODAY THAT YOU’LL STOP LOOKING AT YOUR AGE, WHETHER YOUNG OR OLD AND YOU’LL START LIVING!

LET’S CLIMB THE JOURNEY TOGETHER.

FOR SOME THIS WILL LITERALLY FEEL LIKE CLIMBING MOUNT EVEREST AND FOR OTHERS IT COULD BE AS DIANA NYAD SO WELL PUTS IT;

“BECOME THE PERSON WHO NEVER GIVES UP!”

Let me know what’s the one thing you’ll commit doing today to set you up in achieving your dream. For me, this means setting aside 30mins a day to practice both keyboard and guitar.

Lots of Love &

Keep Climbing
