WHY HOBBIES ARE THE SECRET INGREDIENT

Inspired by Netflix's drama series Self Made.

I recently came across a series on Netflix called 'Self Made', an inspiring story of Madam C.J Walker who rose above the odds and poverty that were prevalent in the early 1900s and became the first black female multi-million entrepreneur.

In this 4-part series, Madam C.J Walker's husband is portrayed as someone who would stand by her, through thick and thin. He supports her by marketing her business, promoting her brand to a potential investor, creating an ad campaign which she refuses because it doesn’t include the type of women she’s targeting.

Madam C.Js passion is for every coloured woman, regardless of size or stature would use her hair product.

Mr. Walker eventually gets frustrated, and jealous as he sees this dream become more successful. To his defence, he longs for a normal life, with no business travel events or mass campaigns.

Long story short, while C.J Walker is having a conversation with Mr. Cleophus (played as Walker’s father), notices that Walker’s frustrated and beginning to get resentment to his wife for being fully invested that she has no time for him.

In this episode, as he entertains the company of another woman, Mr. Cleophus sites this statement; "If you're lonely, get a hobby."

A simple but effective statement, which gave me a moment of realisation as I try and navigate the next steps of my career and relationship.

Do I have a hobby that is leveraging or easing my feelings of loneliness? I’m I being creative with my time to explore, work hard at developing my skills as so to provide value to people who need it?

Now, I ask you this question.

  • Are you lonely? And if so, what is your hobby?

  • What is your passion?

  • Is a close family or friend encouraging you to pursue that dream in your heart?

  • Do you have an accountability partner or friend to check in on your goals?

  • Are you growing in your craft?

I'd like to encourage you to think of a hobby or passion that has been lingering in your mind. Are there ways you can find time to invest time in it?

I reference hobby here as a skill, a craft or someone you are mentoring that allows you to be creative. It could be 10mins in your day, that you invest in yourself to do something you love.

WHY HAVING A HOBBY IS IMPORTANT?

Making space for a hobby allows you to take a break from life’s busy schedules and devote solitude time for yourself.

While most hobbies are fun, some also instil a level of productivity and provides value to your self-development. Things like reading, painting, design, and writing can be creative and fulfilling ways to keep your mind healthy.

You can also have physical hobbies i.e., running, walking, hiking, sports, yoga etc which are good ways to increase our confidence, metabolic rate whilst keeping us fit and active.

Hobbies also offer wonderful benefits when it comes to broadening your imagination. It allows you to think outside of the box, come up with fun new ideas to try and see the world in a new way. Going for walks in a park or nature are a great way to relax your mind, visualise how your project or goal will look like and see beauty in creation.

IF YOU FIND YOURSELF STRUGGLING, HERE ARE A FEW QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF?

1. What would you do free?

2. What problems do you enjoy solving?

3. What makes you cry or breaks your heart?

4. What are some activities that excite you?

4. What’s the one thing you talk about the most to family, friends, or colleagues?

I pray and hope this encourages you to pick up a hobby or continue the one you’re currently doing right now. Whether you’re single, in a new town or just wondering what to do next, focus on building in your craft and find joy in what you do.

I BELIEVE YOU CAN AND YOU WILL.
