YOUR ONE WORD

WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE ONE

Every year, I write down my one word or two that will be the focus for the year.

A friend of mine introduced this to me about 2 years ago and I’ve since been doing it.

It has allowed me to reflect on the things I'd hoped to achieve last year but didn't. I use it to understand the word as a reminder when faced with a difficult decisions or in times when you feel low and tired.

Foaming your one word can be as easy as deciding key words that will be the highlight.

  • Do you want focus to be a priority?

  • Are you looking to take more risks in your career, giving and relationships?

  • How about peace and rest especially in a time like this?

For me, it's 'Fear Not' & I'll explain why.

For many years, I had doubted my ability to do things especially pursuing the things I loved the most.

Whenever I was presented with an opportunity to sing and use my instrument at a friend’s wedding or in church, I’d instantly have a surge of anxiety creep in and wonder;

Me? Really? I mean, maybe?

Self-doubt and ultimately F-E-A-R (false evidence appearing real) would decide whether I'd take that opportunity or not.

On certain occasions I would take on the opportunities, practiced as much as I could, spoke positive affirmations to remind myself I’m going to be okay but find that same nervousness coming back up again.

Until I realised that I'll need to move forward regardless of how I felt.

Having the courage to do something with passion even while still facing the fear.

I wonder if you find yourself in the same situation?

Perhaps, you've struggled to stay disciplined and this has held back many opportunities to finish a project or start something new.

Remember, It's the courage to keep moving forward that matters. Whether you're having to continue the one thing you started or pursuing a new dream.

You'll find yourself doing more by choosing to step out than allowing fear to stop you from accomplishing your dreams.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT

An article by fast company references a certified coach Megan Day who states;

It’s not the word that’s powerful but how long it takes to come up with it.

Having your one word acts as a guidepost, it serves as a guide for your actions, your thought and actions - Meagan Day

When you run into seasons where you feel challenged or not qualified, you remind yourself of your word to either focus, love, fear not, prioritize, take that risk.

With this in mind, I want you to think about your one word.

Ask yourself these 4 questions?

1. What’s been one thing that has constantly held me back every year?

2. What are some of the distractions that stop me from pursuing my passion?

3. Looking back at the previous year, what were my top highlights and what could be improved?

4. What word motivates me to keep going whenever I hear it, read it or think about it?

Once you have these questions answered, write in your notepad or journal words that come to mind instantly that motivate and encourage you to keep going?

Think of things like confidence, trust, loyalty, patience, risk taking e.t.c and write them down.

When you reach atleast 10 or more words, narrow it down to the top 3 or 4 that excite you the most.

From there, choose your one word that will act as a guide to your decisions and actions in the year.

And if you can’t decide on one, it's okay to have 2 or 3 that mean something to you.

“When a word has the power to move you, it has the power to empower you.” - Megan Day

WRITE YOUR WORD SOMEWHERE VISIBLE

Most people post their one word on platforms that keep them accountable.

But if you're starting out, it's best to make it visible in your room and tell a trusted friend or loved one about it.

There's something beautiful when we express why this is our one word because it helps you remember in the long run. Your friend or loved one can also remind you in challenging times of that word.

So whether you choose to journal, put it on a post it note or make a vision board out of it, making your word visible will help to set a reminder in achieving your goals and dreams.

Feel free to comment and share your one word for this year?

Lots of Love,

Annette
